Dan Gattis has served the people of House District 20 with honesty, respect and hard work. As a statesman and an elected leader for his constituents, he continues to stand up for Texas families and Texas values.
Dan has represented the good people of District 20 since first being elected in 2002, and understands the needs of his constituents and neighbors. His District consists of parts of Williamson County, including Georgetown, Cedar Park, Leander, Jarrell, and Round Rock as well as all of Milam County.
Dan serves on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, where he watches over the major financial decisions of the state’s budget and works to keep restraints on spending and waste. He also serves as a member of the Natural Resources Committee, giving suburban and rural Central Texas a strong voice in the Legislature.
Dan’s compassion for children and vulnerable adults inspired him to pass legislation that increases prison sentences for the possession of child pornography, strengthens a judge’s ability to deny bail to criminal defendants, and restores funding for battered women services. He also fought to pass legislation that strengthens children advocacy centers, establishes a "Laci Peterson" law in Texas, and further protects the “right to carry” licensure law for law abiding Texans.
He strongly believes government must be held accountable to the taxpayers. Dan has championed various ‘sunshine’ bills and truth-in-taxation protections for taxpayers.
Further, Dan is dedicated to the American core principle of private property rights, which has led him to fight for greater protection against eminent domain abuses whether the abuses come from private commercial development interests or from a governmental body.
Dan, a Republican, was overwhelmingly re-elected in 2004 and 2006 with more than 63 percent of the vote. During his time in the State Legislature, he has been named a ‘Fighter for Free Enterprise’ by Texas Association of Business, a ‘Defender of The American Dream’ by Americans for Prosperity, and one of the ‘Ten Best Legislators’ by Texas Monthly magazine.
Dan has deep roots in this community, going back six generations. He is a small business owner, arguing for justice when a wrong needs to be made right. He is a husband and a father to three young children. He also works on his family's cattle ranch in Jonah.
